The UK pharmaceutical giant Pfizer on Tuesday said it will launch a “generic version of Viagra,” a brand-name drug containing the active ingredient sildenafil, after its patent expired in November, citing concerns over potential side effects and increased costs.
The patent-protected version, which will be marketed under the name Pfizer Viagra, expires in the spring of 2018.
The drug’s active ingredient is sildenafil citrate, the same active ingredient found in the original erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.
Pfizer said the patent had expired and is now back on its formulary, meaning it can now produce the original Pfizer version, while also launching its own version.
Pfizer will also introduce the generic version, which will be available to buy in pharmacies in a single pack, following a consultation with its pharmacist. It will also be available on the NHS in the form of a prescription.
A separate review into Viagra has found the medicine has caused some to experience dizziness, fainting, an increased sense of well-being and depression. Some patients have also complained of headaches.
Shares in Pfizer were trading up 4 percent on the New York Stock Exchange after the patent expiry.

The company said it was working on launching its version of the drug in the first quarter of 2017. The patent on sildenafil citrate expired in November 2017, but the company said it is looking for other ways to expand its product line.
